What Is IBST?
A single global clock for every boardroom, trading floor and contract deadline. That was the pitch behind International Business Standard Time. The term surfaced in the late 20th century, pushed by multinationals tired of calculating offsets across a dozen offices just to schedule one call. The fix looked obvious: pick one time reference, mandate it for all cross-border business, and stop the calendar chaos.
The reference they picked was UTC+0. No offset from Coordinated Universal Time at all.
IBST and UTC: No Offset Difference
IBST equals UTC+0. There is no offset to calculate.
| Time standard | Offset from UTC |
|---|---|
| UTC | UTC+0 |
| IBST | UTC+0 |
A time listed in IBST is a time in UTC. Full stop. - 14:00 UTC = 14:00 IBST - 09:30 UTC = 09:30 IBST
No conversion. No arithmetic. No mistake to make.
IBST vs UTC vs GMT: Clearing Up Confusion
All three sit at UTC+0. They are not interchangeable.
- UTC (Coordinated Universal Time) is the atomic timescale that underpins aviation, NTP servers, satellite uplinks and every Unix timestamp. It never shifts for daylight saving.
- GMT (Greenwich Mean Time) is a time zone. The UK runs on GMT in winter (UTC+0) and switches to British Summer Time (UTC+1) in summer. Many people say "GMT" when they mean UTC. They are often wrong.
- IBST was a proposed business label for UTC+0. It never caught on. You will not find it in the IANA time zone database, which uses Etc/UTC for the fixed UTC+0 zone.
For more on the UTC vs GMT distinction, see UTC vs GMT.
Is IBST Still Used?
No. IBST is obsolete. You will not see it in a modern flight plan (aviation uses Zulu time, which is UTC), a SWIFT interbank message, or an NTP synchronisation log. If it turns up in a legacy system or an old trade agreement, treat every timestamp as UTC and migrate the field.
The planned abolition of leap seconds by 2035, under CGPM Resolution 4 of 2022, will make UTC an even more stable reference for business and computing. IBST adds nothing that UTC does not already provide.

What This Means for You
Schedule the meeting in UTC. Log the event in UTC. If a system still references IBST, replace the label with UTC and move on. The offset is the same. The clarity is better.
